Olive oil soaps from Nablus

February 4, 2023

Have you seen our olive oil soaps from Nablus? They’re hand-crafted in small batches by a family business using time-honoured traditional methods. Rich in olive oil, this is a nourishing choice for everyday use, restoring the skin’s natural softness.

In addition to the iconic Nablus pure olive oil soap containing more than 77% olive oil, 4 other varieties are available: lemon, rose, sage and honey. We’ve also included a set of 4 vegan soaps – pure, lemon, rose, sage – which is ideal for gifting.

Nablus – a city with a long and rich soap making heritage

Traditionally made in households by women who would set aside a portion of each year’s olive harvest in order to make soap for the family, Nabulsi soap is still made by hand to this day. Following a recipe that hasn’t changed much over the years, the soaps contain over 77% olive oil and only a few other natural ingredients that are biodegradable and free from SLS or parabens.

Dating back to the 10th century, Nablus boasts one of the oldest olive oil soap making-traditions in the world. The industry was once Palestine’s strongest, and olive oil soap from Nablus was exported throughout the Middle East and Europe with a peak in the early 20th century. It is said that Nablus soap’s reputation reached the shores of the UK and became the soap of choice for Queen Elizabeth I.

Having once boasted over 30 soap factories, only two of the original factories remain in the historic centre of Nablus city. The industry started to decline after an earthquake in the 1920s, and has been further impacted by the Israeli military occupation.

The Nablus Soap Company was founded in 1971 by the Tbeleh family who have been making soap for over 400 years. To this day, the person who cuts the soap is known as the “tubeil”, an association with the family that has evolved over centuries.
