As this year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on what has been one of the most challenging and extraordinary years in Zaytoun’s journey.
Logistical hurdles, stemming from last year’s poor harvest and an unprecedented surge in demand, tested us and, above all, our suppliers to the limit. Lack of visibility, extra-long lead times, the need to build significant stock buffers, and the resulting strain on cash flow required coordination, agility and resilience.
Adding to this, despite communicating with suppliers almost daily, the inability to visit Palestine, as we normally do several times a year, left us feeling unable to collaborate as closely on new products or stay attuned to developments on the ground.
This sense of separation was coupled with deep worry and helplessness as events unfolded in Palestine. For many on our team, with friends and relatives in Gaza and close ties to the West Bank, the emotional strain has been deeply felt. Yet, everyone has risen to the challenge. In truly steadfast and awe-inspiring Palestinian fashion, our suppliers have continued to deliver against all odds – humbling and motivating us in equal measure. Their ability to navigate the sheer complexity of delivering products under such conditions is a true embodiment of Palestinian ingenuity. The products arrived looking and tasting exceptional – a testament to their resourcefulness and their steadfast belief in trade as a pathway to a more secure future.
Amidst these challenges, the triumphs of this year have been remarkable. A record number of olive trees planted, a groundswell of solidarity from customers and partners, prompt payments from distributors and wholesalers to ease supply chain pressures, and a landmark listing with a major retailer are all evidence of the strength of this community. The unprecedented surge in awareness and support for our mission has been heartening, reminding us that together, we are creating something deeply impactful. And while we couldn’t celebrate our 20th anniversary as we might have hoped, we marked it with quiet gratitude for everything we’ve achieved together over the years.
Thank you for being with us every step of the way. Your unwavering commitment to supporting trade with Palestine is not just a light in the darkness; it’s the very foundation of what we do.
We wish you a peaceful Christmas and invite you to join us in envisioning a more just and hopeful future – for Palestine and for all.
