As Easter is celebrated here and around the world, our thoughts are especially with the Christian communities in Palestine. We’ve been thinking a lot about our last visit there in 2023, when we were able to catch up with our suppliers, partners, and friends.
One unforgettable stop on that trip, so kindly arranged by our friend Mohammed Hamada (who joined us in UK for Fairtrade Fortnight 2016), was St George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Burqin, 5km west of Jenin – believed to be where Jesus healed the ten lepers.
Perched on a hillside overlooking the road between Burqin and nearby towns, the church is said to be one of the oldest in the world. It has a unique history: it was built in a cave, originally by order of Empress Helena after Christianity became the official religion of the Byzantine Empire, and was later expanded and rebuilt across the centuries.
Stepping inside was something we won’t forget. The sense of peace was powerful — a quiet sanctuary full of history and faith. Its vaulted ceilings, golden icons, and ancient artifacts (some dating back over 900 years) created a space that felt both sacred and deeply human.
We can picture it now, as Easter approaches, preparing for the most important days of the Christian church.
